OFM prospecting: the real problems

· By the Outrify team

In OFM, everything starts with a model. No model, no agency, no revenue, nothing to build. Yet prospecting is the part people talk about the least. They talk about chatting, content, pricing strategy. Rarely about the question that decides everything else: how you find your models, and how you keep finding them.

Among people starting out in OFM, the vast majority of those we meet never sign their second model. It's not a lack of motivation or talent. Prospecting raises very specific problems, and you often only see them once you're stuck. Understanding them already puts you a step ahead.

Problem #1: volume

Signing a model takes a lot of conversations, and a conversation takes a lot of messages. Most people you contact won't reply, some of those who reply won't be interested, and some of those who are interested won't match what you're looking for.

Doing that volume by hand means entire evenings: finding profiles, opening them one by one, checking whether they fit, writing a message, starting over. That's the first wall, and it's where many give up.

Problem #2: consistency

The classic scenario: you prospect hard for a week, you sign someone, and you spend the following weeks taking care of them. Meanwhile, not a single message goes out. When you come back to prospecting, you start from zero.

Prospecting doesn't work in bursts. What gets models signed is a steady flow of new conversations, day after day, even when you're busy elsewhere. That consistency is what separates agencies that grow from those that stall.

Problem #3: targeting

When replies are scarce, the reflex is to contact more broadly. The result: more rejections, conversations that go nowhere, and messages sent to profiles that would never have signed. Poor targeting costs you time and increases the risk on your account, because off-target messages are more often ignored or reported.

Good targeting is written down: who you're looking for, who you exclude outright, and what makes a borderline profile pass or not.

Problem #4: account risk

Your outreach account is your work tool. Sending too many messages too fast, with the same text, from a new account, is exactly the behavior platforms try to limit. One restriction and your prospecting stops dead, sometimes for several days. That fear alone makes many agencies slow down to the point of not prospecting at all.

We cover this in detail in outreach without getting restricted.

Problem #5: credibility

A model who receives your message asks herself a simple question: why should she trust you? When you're starting out, you don't have results to show yet. So your message has to be right: personalized, clear about what you offer, with no exaggerated promises. A generic message sent to everyone is spotted immediately.

The barriers to entry when you start alone

Established agencies solved these problems with resources someone working alone doesn't have:

On your own, you have to do everything at once. And the task that gets dropped first is almost always prospecting, because it's the only one with no visible urgency. Until the day a model leaves and there's no one to replace her.

What works: a system rather than effort

The difference between agencies that sign regularly and the others isn't energy. It's having a system:

  1. Written targeting, with selection and rejection criteria.
  2. Personalized messages, whose reply rate you track.
  3. A fixed daily pace, reasonable for your accounts.
  4. Simple tracking: messages sent, replies, useful conversations, signings.
  5. The repetitive part delegated, so you keep your time for conversations.

That's exactly why Outrify exists. It finds profiles that match your target, decides for each one whether to contact, skip or wait, sends personalized messages at a limited pace and stops on its own at the slightest risk signal. You take over when a model replies, and you finally spend your time on what grows your agency.

Every day without a system, your future models sign elsewhere
